Starsight & $150 Laptop

AfroMusing | Solar | Saturday, November 26th, 2005

starsight

Via Worldchanging.

“combines a street light — something which can bring down crime rates dramatically — with solar panel, wireless network (WiFi or WiMax), remote management, local network access, and (optionally) hookups for charging small devices.”

which also mentions that Cameroon is already adopting starsight in the urban areas.
I found it very interesting and cant help but wish for its adoption in kenya. In addition, this can go hand in hand with the $100 laptop (it will actually retail for $150) as updated on whiteafrican’s post. Putting two and two together, if the stop light has a hookup for charging small devices, a hookup for the laptop wouldnt be too bad. I was thinking along the lines of using a solar powered backpack before, but the cost of said bag is prohibitive at $229, one made at juakali would be nice. Lets start with the streetlight though, I like both ideas.
Since KDN is laying a fiber network the wifi network would have a thorough backbone au sio?

unexpected comedy

AfroMusing | Fun | Sunday, November 20th, 2005

Ok i know this is a really serious story, and that some of us in the blogosphere really like Prof Anyang’ Nyongo, but this bit…

Prof. Nyong’o told a news conference at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi that Transparency International boss Peter Eigen had quoted a kitchen cabinet minister as saying that Anglo Leasing was a government project to raise funds for the poll.

Prof Nyong’o: “When I was told that, I was offended, shocked, flabbergasted and very upset… I nearly disappeared under the table.”

There is a journalist by the name of Loughty Dube.

Millie’s Influence

AfroMusing | Kenya, Africa | Saturday, November 19th, 2005

This story Is about Millie Odhiambo, the founder of CRADLE - Child Rights Advisory Documentation and Legal Center, featured on womens enews website.
As we get closer to the Nov 21 referendum, it is heartening to read of how strong kenyan women are influencing others around Africa.

“We have been motivated by the success stories of women from other countries,” says Somali politician Asha Ahmed Abdalla, who cites in particular the example of Kenya, where women such as Odhiambo play an active role in civil society and are at the helms of nongovernmental organizations. “What we have seen in Kenya is a great motivation to us, for we have seen women participating in almost every section of development.”

It is the seventh story in a series on emerging fem African leaders. To follow along with the rest of the series, here is the link
Africa's Rising Leaders Some great stats are also on MJY’s blog post. Closer to KBW home, i just want to applaud Kenyan Pundit for her indispensable series on the referendum.

Aint that a kick…

AfroMusing | This, that & the other | Friday, November 18th, 2005

Afromusing joined an indoor co-ed soccer league. Today was the first day of the league games. It went alright, I learnt that it is possible to actually see stars, planets and the milky way galaxy, no asteroids though. Cartoons are very accurate in the depiction of what it feels like to have a soccer ball hit you in the face. I didnt see the ball head my way, i just had this sort of awareness that my brain had been destabilized and i think my left brain got switched with my right; i may have heard Frank Sinatra sing “Aint that a kick in the head”, but i am not so sure about that.

boarding pass my …

AfroMusing | not nice of... | Wednesday, November 16th, 2005

I’d like to think that I have an idea of what to expect when flying into and out of small towns in the US; what with my frequent trips here and there, I figured I had the procedure down. Have ID and boarding pass checked, go through security check – remove shoes, place bags and jacket in the bins, proceed through the machine (I’ve gotten so good at this, it never ever beeps. This involves making very careful choices on the types of bra’s to purchase, eliminating belts when traveling..etc) Have boarding pass checked again (depends on airports – some check it only once) Move on to the lounge, put on shoes…chill for the plane. Done with the scrutiny!

Ok, I get onto the plane, and the flight attendant says “May I see your boarding pass?” I quietly handed it over to her and thought hmmm this is different. I never had to show a flight attendant my boarding pass, and there is no dispute about the seating, I was third getting onto the plane. Oh well, never mind that she had some kind of attitude about it. Well, the rest of the passengers get onto the plane and I wonder if they will also be asked for their boarding passes. Is it a new policy? Some change in the routine that i did not know about?

Demographics: 5 Women, 7 Men, 1 sweet little boy.
Adults whose passes were not checked 11/12
Adults whose passes were checked 1/12

You want to guess on the racial composition of the plane? That would just be piling on wouldn’t it? You know what irked me the most though? They did not have hot tea nor the snacks that you can typically buy for a dollar (a girl was hungry and didn’t want soda) I am all for airline safety, but hey how about some consistency here. At least check the passes of all the passengers or not. You bet I will be calling northwest airlines, a couple thousand free frequent flier miles might…might appease my rather peeved ***
